AI acceleration – image processing as a use case

Luncheon meeting · Västerås 2018-12-12

The use of AI is previewed to revolutionize the production processes in the industry, bringing higher quality and higher productivity, with shorter product series, easily tailored for the needs of different markets and customers. Welcome to a luncheon meeting, where researchers at Mälardalen University (MDH) will present their examples and models for how small and middle size enterprises (SME) can adapt AI in image handling.

While data generation is quadrupling each year, modern processors have faced a performance improvement of only 15 percent every two years. This motivates research studies on alternative computing architectures where heterogeneous architecture with deep neural network (DNN) accelerations is emerging as a promising approach.

The DNN accelerator integrated into a heterogeneous system can be trained to realize different functions. Such computing architectures have gained considerable attention from both academy and industry for a wide range of applications like vision, robotics, web search etc.

Masoud Daneshtalab, Associate Professor at MDH, Division of Intelligent Future Technologies, will present the emerging trend in the semiconductor industry and reflects on the necessity of heterogeneity aspect of computation.

Mohammad Loni, PhD student at MDH, Division of Intelligent Future Technologies, will present the DeepMaker project framework and the latest results on DNN accelerators as a heterogeneous solution for speeding up applications like vision.
